Ray completed his schooling education from Downside Preparatory School in Purley and then from Reigate Grammar School. Soon after completing his A-levels, Ray began his professional career by working in a City of London. Later Ray also opened his own company named as Woodlore which offered bushcraft-related courses and paraphernalia. The success of his business made him popular.

His popularity led him to television industry where he worked for BBC and ITV in popular programmes like Tracks (1994), Ray Mears' World of Survival (1997), Ray Mears' Real Heroes of Telemark (2003), Survival (2009), and Survival with Ray Mears (2010).

His profession has also taken him to many places and on various tours as well. During his career, Ray once got into a helicopter accident while Ray and his cameraman got struck to the ground during a steep low-level turn. Luckily no fire occurred despite damaged fuel tank.

Ray is a married man, and he first got married to Rachel Mears back in 2005. The couple met again almost a decade ago in 1992 when Rachel attended one of Ray's five-day survival courses. Their marriage life was taking heights when suddenly Rachel was diagnosed with breast cancer, and she died in 2006. Those days were tough for Ray as it got reported that during that period he was broken, very angry with himself and also baffled about the situation. The couple also had two adult children.

Slowly Ray handled the situation and started to live again. Ray married again in 2009 with Ruth Mears. Today, he is still married and living happily with his second wife with no any rumors of them getting separated or having a divorce.
