Scott completed his schooling education from Coronado High School. He got his first job in journalism when he was just fifteen years of age. Scott continued his studies further by choosing journalism as a primary subject at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. He dropped out of the college and pursued a full-time job.

He began his professional career in 1975 by working as a broadcast journalist at KSEL-TV. Within the next seven years, he switched to KXAS-TV in 1978 and then to WFAA-TV in 1982. Working for seven years in WFAA-TV, he began reporting on Guatemalan refugees in rural jungle areas of Mexico. It was in WFAA-TV, where he grabbed the attention of CBS news, and after four years he joined the CBS network.

His career at CBS began in 1989 as a reporter and has been a correspondent and anchor for CBS News for almost 30 years.

Pelley joined CBS News in 1989 as a New York-based reporter. Covering all major news and conducting many interviews of top personalities including George W. Bush he was well heading towards the right direction. Looking at his work at CBS news Scott also got chance to join 60 minutes in 1999. Later in 2003, he started reporting for 60 Minutes and got shifted to the Sunday edition of the broadcast in 2004.

Talking about CBS Evening News, Scott became an anchor of the show on 6 June 2011. During his first nine months as an evening news anchor, he turned the tables around by grabbing the attention of more viewers and audiences. Scott was making a positive impact on both his viewers and the organization as well. By the end of 2015-2016, he was the main face of CBS Evening News and the show was renamed The CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley.

He was achieving all heights of success, but unfortunately, on 30 May 2017 the news popped up regarding him being fired from the evening news show. Reason being though for such significant action was a dispute between Scott and CBS News president David Rhodes. Some also believe that the downfall of his show ratings played a crucial role in his exit. Insiders also argue that Scott decided himself backed down from being the main face of the show.

His last appearance for CBS Evening show on 16 June 2017, and he was replaced by Anthony Mason and later by Jeff Glor. However, Jeff was criticized for not matching the heights of Scott Pelley as the show reportedly lost more than 1.5 million viewers.
